Many organizations still rely on NetApp FAS8200 systems for VMware, NAS, SAN, backup, archive, and departmental workloads. As these systems approach later lifecycle stages, the question is not simply whether to replace them.
The better question is: what role does each FAS8200 play, and what is the safest support path for that workload?
Some systems should be refreshed. Some should be migrated. Some can be safely extended with independent support. Others should be retired. The right answer depends on workload criticality, ONTAP version, VMware dependencies, capacity trends, backup readiness, spare-parts availability, and compliance exposure.
The biggest mistake is waiting until the support deadline forces a rushed decision. Infrastructure teams should begin planning 12 months or more before the support milestone.
